  1. •••••••••• What's it do? ••••••••••

  3. The two applications, Remote Control and Server Controller, allow the owner of
  4. a Macintosh to start or stop the file server running on that Macintosh using
  5. another Macintosh at another location on the network.
  6.  
  7. •••••••••• Setup ••••••••••
  8.  
  9. To setup the server Macintosh:
  10. • Drop the Server Controller application in the System Folder's Startup Items
  11. folder.
  12. • Make sure the Macintosh Owner Name, Owner Password, and Macintosh Name of are
  13. set with the Sharing Setup control panel or AppleShare Admin application.
  14. • Make sure Program Linking is “on” with the Sharing Setup control panel.
  15. • Make sure Program Linking is enabled for the owner of the system with the
  16. Users & Groups control panel or AppleShare Admin application.
  17. • Make sure AppleTalk is “on” with the Chooser.
  18. • Reboot the system; Server Controller will be launched and if everything is
  19. setup correctly, you won't see any error notification dialogs.

  21. To setup and use the remote Macintosh to control the server remotely:
  22. • Make sure Program Linking is “on” with the Sharing Setup control panel.
  23. • Make sure AppleTalk is “on” with the Chooser.
  24. • Run the Remote Control application.
  25. • Select “Connect to Remote Macintosh…” from the Remote menu.
  26. • Use the program linking and the user identity dialogs to connect to the
  27. server Macintosh as the server’s owner (other users cannot connect).
  28. • Using Remote Control from here on is pretty obvious; just quit, or disconnect
  29. and quit when you're done.

  31. •••••••••• About Server Controller ••••••••••

  33. Server Controller is a faceless background application; it has no user
  34. interface and won't show up in the Application menu.  When it's launched, it
  35. first performs a few checks to make sure it can do its job; if it can't, then
  36. it puts up an error notification dialog describing the problem and then quits.
  37. If everything is set up correctly, then it opens a PPC port and goes to sleep
  38. until the server's owner, using the Remote Control application, connects with
  39. it.  While the owner is connected,  Server Controller sends status information
  40. to the Remote Control application and makes server control calls passed to it
  41. by Remote Control.

  43. If you need to quit Server Controller, you can use ProcDoggie or Task-It (two
  44. other DTS sample applications), or you can drag Server Controller out of the
  45. Startup Items folder and reboot.

  47. •••••••••• About Remote Control ••••••••••

  49. Remote Control displays status information it gets from Server Controller and
  50. send server control commands to Server Controller to start the server, stop the
  51. server, or cancel the start or stop operation.  The only menu items of real
  52. interest are File, which lets you quit Remote Control, and Remote, which lets
  53. you connect to or disconnect from the Server Controller application.

  55. Once a connection is made with the Server Controller application, a small
  56. window will appear with a single button and some status information.  The
  57. button will either be Start, Stop, or Cancel depending on current status of the
  58. remote file server.  The status information returned is:
  59. • Macintosh Name, the name of the Macintosh running Server Controller you've
  60. connected to.
  61. • Zone, the zone the Macintosh running Server Controller you've connected to is
  62. in.  (If there are no zones, this field will be “*”)
  63. • Status, the status of the remote file server.

  65. To disconnect from the Server Controller application, you can use either the
  66. Remote menu or you can Quit the Remote Control application.

  70. 1.0d2 - Although this is only version 1.0d2, it is completely usable and has no
  71. crashing bugs that I know of.  I'll be making several major internal changes to
  72. both applications before releasing another version, but since this version
  73. works and is useful, I thought I'd pass it around and get a little feedback on
  74. the user interface, etc.

  76. Remote Control 1.0d2++ - I've fixed a few minor bugs and rebuilt the program
  77. with the final ServerControlIntf file.

  79. Server Controller 1.0d2++ - I fixed a problem with case-insensitivity in the
  80. user name and rebuilt the program with the final ServerControlIntf file.

  82. Remote Control 1.0 - If the PPC connection is broken, the application window is
  83. now closed.

  85. Server Controller 1.0 - Server Controller now grabs 2K of extra stack space so
  86. it can work with other programs that "borrow" too much of its stack space.

  88. NOTE: Remote Control and Server Controller must be the same version.  Version
  89. 1.0 of Remote Control can only see version 1.0 of Server Controller (i.e., it
  90. cannot see or use earlier versions of Server Controller).
